Time is truly flying and I find myself struggling at times to keep up the pace especially with all the new projects I have taken on this year: wiki.hackerspaces.org - great census of 2019, helping to reopen the organic shop in Wittstock and helping Energie Dezent eV with their website and potentionally another one in the works but more on that next time.
You can follow the progress of the different projects with upcoming blog posts and get in touch if you would like to contribute in some way.
In the meantime we have been as busy as always here...
We welcomed Luiz, Rebecca, Celia, Mehdi and Scott (he just loves coming and going) and said goodbye to Jennifer, Mehdi and Celia.
Celia wrote a great day in the life...blog post to give some insight about what kind of activities the volunteers get up to.
Luiz, Rebecca, Celia, Mehdi and Scott made a great team and I was very happy of how we all clicked :-)
Mehdi came to us from the new platform we are using to attract volunteers.. We have a few more bookings so maybe we have an easier time filling in the volunteering spots.
I bumped into a permaculture projects in Germany directory and decided to include us in there.
Tech & Prototypes
Luiz is building an automated dog feeder with assistance from Franz and the other volunteers, it is an interesting prototype and we can't wait to see it in action.
Scott made a microcontroller environmental sensor system assisted by Ben & Franz.
News from the garden & indoor greenhouse (aka the bathroom)
Jennifer, Celia and Rebecca helped me with planting indoors and outdoors. I am happy to see so much green already in the trays, chili, bell peppers, tomatoes and a couple of artichoke plants look promising. A tray of lettuce just started to sprout today so we'll have to see what happens with that.
Sadly it was way too warm in the bathroom for the spinach, I will plant that outside soon.
New beds have been created near the trailer, trees trimmed and beds enhanced with compost. We are in good stead for the planting season to start.
The herb garden and the yard square bed have been fenced and therefore the dogs can no longer go in there digging.
Garden planning continues now parallel with preparation of beds. I am very happy with the progress. In the meantime the first flowers in the garden colour the areas under the trees and attract the bumble bees. And... we are still harvesting Brussel Sprouts and Kale, completely mouth watering when fried in garlic infused oil.
We have had our first garden picnic of the year, in February! Makes one wonder what kind of summer lays ahead.
The fox got another chicken! Despite the electric fence, which is frustrating. We were not happy and so we moved the chickens back in the yard. This brings our chicken count back to 3.
On the plus side, the day we moved back the chickens into the yard the ducks started to lay eggs and so it seems like they are compensating for the egg deficit caused by the fox.
I would like to get more chickens though, perhaps in March.
Needs & Wants
Thinking about spring cleaning? Good because we need tons of stuff :-D
